The difference between motorcycle oils and automotive engine oils.
Motorcycles unlike cars run under extreme temperatures and pressures. These machines offer a vast amount of horse power in one very small package compared to cars. When we look at the maintenance side of the equation, it’s a whole world of difference between a car engine oil and a motorcycle oil.
Motorcycle engines operate at higher speeds which promotes foaming and thus reducing the oils load carrying ability other wise known as film strength. The compression ratio of a motorcycle is much higher which increases engine operating temperature creating thermal degradation of the oil. Motorcycles also have twice the horse power per cubic inch of displacements which creates heat and stress. Many motorcycles are air cooled and this exerts an increased amount of heat which causes the oil to thin and reduces its load carrying ability. Many motorcycles share the same sump for the engine and transmission creating a need for the oil to meet engine and transmission specifications.
As you see motorcycle oils are very different from automotive engine oils. They need to have the additive package to support wet clutch compatibility, the ability to resist foaming and reduce friction, the ability to maintain viscosity under high temperatures, and the ability to resist volatility to name a few.
